Day 3 #lockdown reflection
Managerial ecology can be expressed as resource and environmental management that includes instrumental application of utilitarian economic approaches and science in the ambit of economic development and resource utilisation. This basically means that managerial ecology comprises resource and environmental management as informed by economic and science principles to achieve the mission and vision of a specific organisation or tourism destination. Managerial ecology is guided by a systems thinking approach as influenced by chaos and complexity theory.
By applying managerial ecology in an organisation the human and nature interactions and linkages are respected and acknowledged and management approaches are characterized by resilience and systems thinking underlined by chaos and complexity theory.
By applying a managerial ecological approach to destination management in tourism, the destination aims to identify linkages with quantified cause-and-effect responses between antropogenic, ecological, management and systems components to promote healthy human and nature interactions towards planetary health.
Components of a managerial ecological system can include:
- Sustainable Development Goals : identify linkages, cause and effect responses
- Being able to quantify destination footprint in terms of water, carbon, waste, ecosystem factor impact
- Ecological and anthropogenic stock take baseline completed
- Being able to identify human-nature interactions
- Have internal and external awareness programs guiding planetary health
- Management systems are characterized by implementing a systems thinking approach guided by chaos and complexity theory
- Resilience is embedded in the management model of the destination
- Participation in certification schemes that can provide economic benefits with positive socio-ecological outcomes
- The outcome of the management system is measurable and demonstrates human-nature linkages
- The destination is managed like a living ecosystem
